Samples and Populations Unit-Week of Nov. 19th

We will have the Investigation 1 Quiz next Monday, November 19th. This will be the end of the unit, when we return from Thanksgiving Break we will start a new unit.

I will let students know today that any missing work/ corrections are due by Tuesday, November 20th.

I will not assign homework over the break.

On Tuesday, November 20th we will take the Formative Assessment in the computer lab. This is a "practice" test for the state assessments. The test results let me know what concepts students understand and allow them the opportunity to practice test-taking strategies.

For this week (week of November 12th) I have changed the homework for Friday. Instead of the problem from the book the students will have a worksheet practicing percents. Many of them are still struggling with this in math class.

Moving Straight Ahead Unit Test

The Unit Test for Moving Straight Ahead is scheduled for next Wednesday, October 24th. The study guide was handed out in class today. I had the students write two due dates at the top:

Monday, October 22nd - "Rough Draft" due date - This means students need to bring their study guide with all the problems they know how to do completed. They need to be prepared to ask questions about the problems they don't understand.

Wednesday, October 24th - "Final Draft" due date - This means the study guide needs to be completed.

I am not assigning any other homework between now and Wednesday. I have told the students this is because I want them to work at least 15 minutes each day on their study guide. This is the best way to study for the unit test.

On page 1 of the study guide it asks the students to use their calculator. We will do this in class tomorrow (October 18th).

Other things to know:
The study guide is worth 25 points
No corrections are allowed on unit tests.
Any missing work/corrections for this unit are due October 24th.
We will begin a new unit on Monday, October 29th. I will collect Moving Straight Ahead and hand out the new book.
I have tentatively scheduled two study/review sessions next week - Monday after school (3:15 to 3:45) and Wednesday before school (7:15 to 7:45). I will let you know if this changes.

Monday, October 15, 2012

Week of October 15th

Today I am handing back the Investigation 3 quizzes. These quiz scores were not as good as the last quiz. I am setting up appointments after school this week for corrections. Week of January 16th

We practiced writing equations on Friday, so we are starting 2.2 this week.

Monday: We will draw a Real Number System diagram then do Problem 2.2.
Homework: pg. 38 #26-28 (more practice solving equations) due Wednesday
Tuesday: Finish 2.2 and start 2.4 (we are skipping 2.3)
Wednesday: Finish 2.4
Homework: Rational Number Worksheet (from the diagram we created) due Friday
Thursday: Review Thinking With Mathematical Models
Friday: Bellwork Quiz (includes squares and square roots, real number system, and slope and y-intercept)
TWMM Final Quiz - This will cover Investigation 1 and Investigation 2. See the following readiness checklist I gave the students on Monday, January 16th.
The following concepts will be covered on the final quiz. Put a check mark by the concepts you already understand. Put a question mark (?) by the concepts you are struggling with.

1) Completing patterns in a table (like hw pg. 20 #32)
2) Writing equations when given:
    a) A graph (pg. 36 11-18)
    b) The slope and a point on the line (pg. 36 11-18)
    c) A real world situation comparing two companies costs (Problem 2.2, 2.4)
3) Using an equation you have written (2c)
4) Deciding which graph matches the given table (throughout the book)
5) Understanding the difference between linear and non-linear relationship (throughout the book)

Homework: Rational Numbers Worksheet due Monday

Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you! Mrs. Anderson

Update

This week we finished 2.1, but we did not start 2.2. All classes needed extra practice writing equations. We will start 2.2 on Monday.
I have tentatively scheduled the Investigation 2 Quiz for next Friday, January 20th. Once we take this quiz we will be done with this unit.

Week of January 2nd

Welcome back!
We are starting a new book, Thinking With Mathematical Models, (TWMM). The students are continuing to explore linear relationships and learning about non-linear relationships.

Wednesday: TWMM Problem 1.1
     Homework: pg. 12 # 1 due Friday

Thursday: TWMM finish Problem 1.1 and start 1.2

Friday: TWMM Problem 1.2
Homework: pg.20 #32 due Monday (I have handed out a copy of this page so the students can start early. It may be difficult to find some of the patterns)
